What changes in the file
Every subtitle gets a number, times use a comma (00:01.500 becomes 00:00:01,500), and the WEBVTT header, NOTE, STYLE and REGION blocks are left out because SRT has no place for them. Bold, italic and underline stay. Voice tags keep the speaker's name (<v Anna>Hi becomes Anna: Hi), class and karaoke time tags are removed, and & becomes a plain &. Positions such as align:start cannot be stored in SRT; the page counts how many subtitles had one.
Common questions
Why convert VTT to SRT?
SRT is the format most video editors, TVs, media players and upload forms accept. Captions downloaded from YouTube, Zoom, Vimeo or a web player usually come as .vtt.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Everything happens in this page, in your browser. Your subtitles are not sent anywhere.
My VTT has subtitles with no text. What happens to them?
They are left out and counted, because an SRT subtitle without text breaks the numbering in many players.
Are other languages and scripts kept?
Yes, every script is kept, and the SRT is saved as UTF-8, which current editors and players read.
What about very long files?
Files up to 20 MB and recordings longer than 99 hours convert correctly.
